I would like to add that I live close to Stuart's bike store, Glen Parkers South and have purchased a number of items from him as well as having my bike serviced there. Stuart is a great guy and my experience with him has always been positive, he really does go the extra mile to provide technical information as well as excellent customer service. He doesnt try to sell me a bike each time i go in there (unlike the other LBS's in the area) and i am most likely to buy my next bike from him. Price is a factor but there are times when paying a little extra is well worth it. Keep up the good work Stuart.

I am currently in the process of buying a new bike and am a massive believer in supporting local shops.

I had to buy a couple of finishing parts online (saddle, handlebars & stem) due to them not be available locally- unfortunately i have to report that i got better service and advice from the on-line shops...

Problem is if you have been around bikes for a while you don't necessarily need advice- and i'm finding that the local shops aren't delivering the service to justify their price premiums.

Next bike will be all ordered on-line and i'll just pay the shop a fee to build it :(

I had to buy a couple of finishing parts online (saddle, handlebars & stem) due to them not be available locally– unfortunately i have to report that i got better service and advice from the on-line shops…

Problem is if you have been around bikes for a while you don’t necessarily need advice– and i’m finding that the local shops aren’t delivering the service to justify their price premiums.

O'Mara's is my LBS as well, when I had a problem with my rear wheel they provided a spare to keep me going while they sorted it out with the distributor. So far, the internet hasn't been able to do that!

That's a really good point. The few that I deal with are also very good with returns and delivery. They have to be though. Cyclists like to talk over coffee especially when it comes to new toys and bad experiences.

I bought my bike from O'Mara Cycles and they were great. I know less than nothing about bikes and they were so helpful, the mechanic even offered to show me how to clean it, change tubes etc etc.

While I waited to do the fitting, it was like standing around chatting with old mates.

Now I go back there for all the servicing etc even though they're a 40 minute drive from my place.

Well discussed guys, there are always going to be people buying from the net, its Human nature to want a bargain...But agreed Stuart, how many times do we not hear about the mishaps, incorrect size sent, wrong description, 'lets not tell our mates about that', might look like an idiot... Give your LBS a chance at least.

Interesting article...

Personally I totally agree, you need to focus on what you can control. Everything else is irrelevant.

What I do find particularly interesting, is that many online retailers are no different. They may have a price advantage, but many are also focusing on customer service (just of a different kind to what you can expect in a LBS).
